KAMPALA
Police have explained a viral video showing armed security personnel firing shots into the air during an operation in Kampala’s central business district.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 20, at about 6:00pm in Nakivubo Cell, Nakasero III Ward, when a joint security team conducted an operation at Original Kiseka Spare Centre in Kiseka Market.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said the officers were responding to a violent crowd that attempted to block the arrest of suspects.
According to Kawala, the officers had gone to arrest suspected offenders but encountered resistance from a group of people who turned violent and attempted to obstruct the operation.
“To disperse the unruly crowd and restore order, the officers fired warning shots into the air,” she said.
She added that the situation was later brought under control and two suspects (identity disclosed) were arrested.
The explainer comes after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, triggering public debate over the conduct of the security personnel.
