In the first case, police are investigating the death of Tibayungwa Patrick, 42, a resident of Rwamabare village, Bumbaire parish in Bumbaire sub-county, Bushenyi district.

According to police, Tibayungwa died on June 7 while being rushed to hospital for treatment after allegedly sustaining injuries from repeated assaults.

Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa said the assault case had initially been reported to Bumbaire Police Station on June 5.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was allegedly assaulted several times by his brother, Mugumya David, 51, who is also a resident of the same village.

Following Tibayungwa’s death, the case was upgraded from assault to murder and registered at Bushenyi Central Police Station.

Police visited and processed the scene before transferring the body to Kitagata Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

“The suspect, Mugunywa David, has been arrested and is currently in Police custody to assist with ongoing investigations,” SP Tayebwa said.

In a separate incident, police are investigating the death of Erisha, 23, a resident of Bumbaire in Bushenyi district, whose body was initially believed to be that of a victim of a road crash.

The matter was first reported to Ishaka Police Station on May 26 as a fatal hit-and-run accident along the Ishaka–Kasese Road.

The body was taken to KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

However, police said medical findings from the postmortem conducted on May 27 revealed multiple bruises and injuries consistent with assault, raising suspicion of foul play.

Further investigations established that Erisha had earlier been reported missing after allegedly being taken from his home by unidentified individuals over accusations of coffee theft.

Police said he was not seen again until relatives positively identified his body on June 5.

A case of suspected murder has since been registered and investigations and identify those responsible.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” SP Tayebwa told reports.

Police condemned all forms of violence and mob justice, urging members of the public to report suspected offenders to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.

“Suspected offenders should always be reported to the relevant authorities for lawful handling and due process,” he emphasized.
