Sudanese nationals living in Uganda have announced plans to engage in civic activities in refugee-hosting communities across the country. The goal is to foster mutual understanding and strengthen relations between the Sudanese community and the Ugandan government.Speaking at a press briefing in Kampala, Salih Idris Adam, Chairperson of the Sudanese Refugee Community, said the activities will commence on August 15, 2024, in Kiryandongo district. The events will include volunteer work in hospitals, schools, and public places, aiming to promote interaction and build relationships between Sudanese nationals and Ugandans.

Idris Adam expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for providing asylum to over 1 million Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers, mostly women and children.

It should be recalled that since Independence in 1956, Sudan has been plagued by civil wars, racism, tribalism, and religious tensions which prompted to the secession of Christian dominated South Sudan from the Oil rich Sudan in 2007. In 2019, another civil war erupted in Khartoum Sudan in which the army staged a successful coup de tat that ousted President Omar Al Bashir. The endless conflicts have forced many Sudanese to run away from their country to neighboring states as refugees.

The Sudanese Refugee Community has  appealed to Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to support efforts to restore peace in Sudan.

The Ugandan government’s efforts to provide asylum and support to Sudanese refugees have been widely recognized, and this initiative by the Sudanese Refugee Community is a testament to the country’s commitment to hospitality and humanitarian values.
