KAMPALA
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the break-in at Bank of Uganda headquarters in Kampala where seven laptops were stolen earlier this week.
Police spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke has identified the suspects as Michael Boaz Kule, 19, from Wabigalo, and Ramadhan Kabuye alias Rhama of Nsambya Zone C in Kampala.
On Monday morning (May 4), the bank admitted to reports of unlawful and forced entry into their premises which allegedly occured overnight, stating that it had together with security commenced on investigations.
“The matter is currently under investigation, and the BoU is working closely with the relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to take appropriate action,” the bank statement read in parts.
Later that day, security forces, including police and military personnel, conducted a joint operation in downtown Kampala, targeting Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, City House, and Kalungi Plaza. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said the operation followed complaints from the public over increased phone theft in the city. However, insiders said the operation was aimed at tracking the stolen devices at the Central bank. Over 20 suspects accused of dealing in stolen mobile phones were arrested during the crackdown
Four days later, police reported the arrest of two suspects, but did not confirm whether the suspects make part of those arrested in the Monday raid in downtown Kampala.
“We wish to confirm the arrest of two suspects linked to the break-in at Bank of Uganda.” ACP Rusoke said.
He added that two devices were recovered, noting that more arrests may follow. The duo are according to Kituuma in police custody.
In related reports, enormous sources close to the probe told Parrots Media that the laptops, 30 in number, which were seized from downtown are under forensic analysis. The detectives said at least five security officers who were on duty on the night of the raid have been arrested and are kept at Railway Police Station for questioning.
