Two people were killed when sand slid and buried them alive at a quarry as they attempted to escape.
The incident occured on Thursday 8 February, 2024, at around 1500hrs at sand quarry in Kanyamisinga village, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson identified the deceased as Mugarura Anaklet, 20, a resident of Kanyamisinga, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, and Niwamanya Barnet, 31, a resident of Kijanga cell, Rutugunda parish Kirima Sub County, both in Kanungu.
“The two deceased were loading sand on the tipper lorry when the sand slid and buried them alive as they attempted to escape. They were suffocated to death despite attempts to rescue them.
Police team led by the OC Kihiihi Police Station ASP Tumukunde, D/IP Tuheibwe Erasmus, SOCO, Homicide detectives and armed personnel visited the scene and recorded statements from the witness.
Bodies were retrieved and sent to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for postmortem and the sand quarry was closed.
Maate attributed the cause of their death to suffocating.
