The president of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) political party, Hon. James Jimmy Akena Obote has charged the government to put in place a positron emissions tomography (PET) scan at cancer institute Mulago to improve on cancer prevention and care in Uganda.
Akena was speaking at a media briefing to honor the late Hon. Cecilia Ogwal Barbrah Atim, the Dokolo district Woman Member of Parliament at UPC headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday January 24.
He described the late Cecilia Ogwal as a legislator who was more concerned about installation of cancer detection machine in Uganda from the time of passing away of former parliamentary speaker, late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah.
“As a member of UPC and a leader in this country its a clear that we must do more to strengthen our healthcare systems to deal with this crisis,” he said.

He asked the government which is charged with maintaining of citizenry health to intervene into the issue of many Ugandans seeking for treatment abroad after failing to receive quality healthcare services in domestic hospitals.
“Our health facilities are struggling to meet the demands we face. As a result, many people with resources are opting for alternatives to the government system,” Akena added.
Furthermore, the UPC president called on the government to equip health facilities with enough drugs, equipments and specialized health workers to improve on the state of healthcare in the country.
On the great services by the late Cecilia Ogwal who is also a former member of UPC, Akena said the late was a determined leader whose role in the party, parliament and national development will forever be felt.
