Eleven soldiers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have been airlifted to Kampala in critical conditions to get emergency medical treatment after they got involved in deadly accident in Moroto district.
The officers were heading to Moroto Barracks to attend a security meeting with South Karamoja military chiefs when a vehicle inwhich they were travelling overturned injuring 11 of them.
Lt. Col. Godfrey Kayongo, the commandant 49 Battalion in Nabilatuk district was among the five soldiers who were critically injured.
The accident happened on Thursday near Hotel Africana at around 9:56am, about four kilometres from Moroto town along Soroti road.
The injured soldiers were first rushed to the Moroto regional referral hospital and later airlifted to Bombo updf hospital in Kampala for urgent treatment.
Maj. Isaac Oware , the army spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division army said the accident resulted from a tyre burst.
He added that another military vehicle immediately arrived at the scene and the casualties were evacuated to the hospital.
Security also picked up bullets that were spread on the ground where an accident occuref.
Police and the UPDF have started on the investigations into the cause of the accident.
