RUBIRIZI
A disturbing pattern of vandalism targeting critical government infrastructure is on increase across the country, with the latest incident occurring in Katanda 1 Village, Katanda Sub County, Rubirizi District.
During the night of January 16th -17th, suspected criminals vandalized and stole 120 meters of electrical wires from a three-phase power line, severely disrupting local power supply. In response to the damage, a team of electricians from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) Katerera Branch was promptly dispatched to assess the site and begin repairs.
The initial investigations suggest that the perpetrators were likely individuals with expertise in handling electrical systems, raising concerns about the involvement of trained professionals in these illegal activities.
The authorities in Rubirizi have warned the public to take note of the growing trend of vandalism and to be aware of the severe legal consequences for anyone involved in such criminal acts. Those found aiding or abetting the theft of electrical infrastructure including transporters, buyers, and storage providers may face imprisonment of up to 12 years or a fine of to a tune up to one billion shillings under the Electricity Amendment Act of 2022.
“We are concerned about the increasing frequency of such incidents, which not only disrupt essential services but also pose a significant risk to public safety,” said a spokesperson from UEDCL. “We want to send a clear warning to those who think they can evade responsibility by claiming ignorance they will face the full force of the law,” he added.
