Police are investigating the fatal shooting of veteran journalist Joe Nam, who was gunned down at his home in Kawanda Central, Nabweru Division, Wakiso district, in the early hours of Sunday.
Luke Owoyesigiyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson said the deceased, former reporter for New Vision was shot at around 1:00 a.m. by an unidentified masked gunman.
Preliminary findings indicate that Nam had stepped outside his residence for prayers when the attacker struck.
“The suspect, who was masked, fled the scene immediately after the incident,” Owoyesigiyire said.
Police said the deceased’s wife heard gunshots moments later and rushed outside, where she found him lying dead. She immediately alerted authorities.
Owoyesigiyire added that detectives have since been deployed to the scene to gather evidence and pursue leads that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.
“The body has been taken to the mortuary at Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem as part of the investigations. Other teams are on the ground to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and what could be the motive for the shooting,” he said.
Nam had a distinguished journalism career, during which he covered business, environment and political affairs. After retiring from active newsroom work, he remained engaged in the media industry as a consultant.
Police have appealed to members of the public with any information that could aid investigations to come forward.
