Women across Uganda are today (Tuesday) voting for their representatives at sub-county, municipal division and town council level.
The elections, being conducted by lining up behind candidates, are taking place in 2,165 sub-counties across the country, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The positions being contested are chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, publicity secretary and secretary for finance.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the electoral college comprises the five members of women committees at parish level in each sub-county.
“For example, a sub-county with 10 parishes will have an electoral college of 50 voters, with five representatives from each parish,” Mucunguzi explained.
Mucunguzi said Tuesday’s elections will be the last in the current women’s committee election process to be conducted through lining up.
He said subsequent elections at district and national level will be conducted by secret ballot.
“The subsequent elections at the district and national level will see the reintroduction of voting by secret ballot,” Mucunguzi said.
He urged candidates, voters and other stakeholders to adhere to the electoral laws and guidelines issued by EC officials.
Mucunguzi also called on participants to maintain peace throughout the exercise to ensure the elections are conducted in accordance with the law.
The elections are part of the process of constituting women’s committees from the parish level through to the national level.
