Cycling advocates in Kampala are set to use the World Bicycle Day celebrations on Wednesday June 3,2026 to call for increased investment in cycling infrastructure and policies that support the use of bicycles as a safe, affordable and sustainable mode of transport.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Bicycle Mayor for Kampala, Owiny Hakim, cycling offers a practical solution to urban mobility challenges while contributing to improved public health and environmental sustainability.
The event will be held under the theme, “Cycling for Clean Air, Better Health, and Lower Transport Costs.”
Owinyi said bicycles provide an affordable means of daily transportation and can help reduce dependence on motorized transport in a city where traffic jams continue to affect productivity and quality of life.
“This year’s celebration highlights the need for safer cycling infrastructure, supportive policies and greater public awareness of cycling as a reliable mode of transport,” the statement said.
Organizers emphasize that cycling should be viewed not only as a recreational activity but also as a viable transportation option capable of easing pressure on Kampala’s roads. They note that every bicycle journey contributes to reduced traffic congestion, improved air quality and a more livable city.
The advocates also called on government agencies, private-sector players and local communities to work together to make Kampala safer and more accessible for cyclists.
The appeal comes amid growing global efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector.

Cycling has increasingly been recognized as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for short-distance travel in urban centers.
As part of the World Bicycle Day message, stakeholders have been urged to invest in infrastructure and policies that place bicycles at the center of Kampala’s future transport planning.
“Every bicycle journey contributes to a cleaner, healthier and more connected Kampala,” the statement said.
World Bicycle Day is observed annually on June 3 to recognize the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable means of transportation that promotes health and social inclusion.
