Police in Kayunga District has arrested 61 suspects including opposition members of parliament from the National Unity Platform on allegations of causing violence and disrupting poll exercise in the District Chairperson by election.
ASP Hellen Butoto, the Sezibwa region police spokesperson has identified the legislators as Hon. Aloysius Mukasa, MP Rubaga South; Hon. Lukyamuzi David Kalwanga, MP Busujju-Mityana; and Hon. Tebandeke Charles, MP Baale, these were arrested for campaigning beyond the deadline, disobedience of orders and for violating the curfew provisions. While David Sserukenya, the Makindye Ssabagabo MP was arrested on allegations of voter bribery.
The four legislators were arrested alongside their supporters who security allege were being mobilised to cause electoral violence as well as disrupting the voting exercise.
“No specific threats were directed towards the electoral process, we picked credible intelligence about groups that were being mobilized to cause violence and disrupt the voting process,” Butoto said.
According to Butoto, the suspects were ferried to Kayunga, from Makindye, Kawempe, Rubaga, Nabweeru and Wakiso.
She said they are being processed for further court action.
By the time of compiling this report, vote stuffing was ongoing and Butoto said that there were no security threats in the voting exercise.
“As you aware, the voting exercise for the election of the LC V Chairperson, ended successfully at 4pm. The general security situation in the district has been calm, as we as the safety of all participants,” she said.
Butoto assured the people of Kayunga of safety.
“Our tactical response teams are effectively deployed to deter and counter any acts of criminality and lawlessness in the district.”
