Government through the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries has removed quarantine that was imposed on the movement of animals and animal products within and outside Katakwi District over foot and mouth disease.

The five months animal quarantine was imposed in 2021 August after Katakwi district registered rise in foot and mouth disease- FMD.

In a letter dated 12 January 2022 to the Chief Administrative Officer Katakwi District seen by Parrots UG, Dr. Ben Ssenkeera, the commissioner Animal Health at the MAAF noted that, the restriction which had been imposed on animals has been lifted.

The restrictions wwre on the movement of animals including among others; cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and their products from, to, through and within the sub counties of Getom, Kapujan, Okulonyo and Katakwi.

The decision to lift up the ban was reached after a strategic vaccination campaign in the affected areas.

“The laboratory investigations undertaken by the Ministry have confirmed the absence of Foot and Mouth disease in the above sub counties,” Ssenkeera said in a statement.

Geoffrey Omolo the Katakwi District Chairperson, has commended the Ministry for opening up the district.

He said the District, has been facing financial challenges since the weekly Ocorimongin cattle market, and has been closed
