Parish chiefs and town agents from western Ugandan have decried to government to provide them with transport means to work.
The chiefs and agents under their umbrella, Western Region Principal Town Agents and Parish Chiefs Association raised concerns to Local Government minister Raphael Magezi in Bushenyi on Thursday.
The meeting attended by chiefs and agents from districts of greater Bushenyi, kigezi, rwenzori and Rwizi was held at Bushenyi district multi purpose hall.
Amerad Twinamatsiko, the association chairman told the minister that they have lost respect and dignity among the people because of hostile working conditions caused by poor transport means like riding on bicycles, and walking on foot.
He said those posted in remote areas and are not provided with transport facilitations spend their meagre salaries on transport yet it should be a role of government to facilitate its workers.
Minister Magezi pledged to present raise grievances before cabinet but, asked them to be a little more patient since the government has decided to first deal with the vehicles of district chairpersons.
He urged the parish chiefs and town agents to work harder to increase the local revenue from their parishes so that they can get some allowance for transport.
Magezi further threatened chiefs against meddling into parish development model funds asking for bribes from individual groups or else they will face jail.
