Flavia Kyomugisha, journalist at GNTV in Mbarara is in dilemma after her employer failed to pay renumeration now for about 20 months.

In a touching videotape purportedly released on Saturday 4th March, 2023 by the aggrieved journalist, she confessed that she has now turned into a dependant at a friend’s rental after she was issued to a house eviction notice by landlord over accumulating rent.

A mother of three children breaks down while narrating her employment ordeal at the station.

According to her, on 1st June, 2021, she signed a contract inwhich the employer agreed to pay her a salary worth Shs350,000 per month but nearly 20 months down the road, no single penny has been paid by her employer now amounting to Shs7m.

“When I went to ask my bosses about my payment, the manager (Charles Rukundo) said I am over complaining and this will bring negativity among other workers,” Kyomugisha narrates while she breaks down.

Kyomugisha reported the matter to Uganda Human Rights Commission who told her they had written a letter to the television management and would respond within 21 days. However, the 21 days is a long time when she can hardly have anything to eat with her children. She appeals to kind Ugandans to run for her rescue.

“My landlord chased me out of the house and I am now staying with a friend with my three children and we are starving. My children no longer go to school and my husband who is a casual labourer got heartbroken and I took him to a friend. We are really in a bad state! Whoever has Shs100 or more pliz help us, my children and I are starving,” she said.

Located in Kamukuzi division few metres from Kakyeeka stadium, GNTV is a faith based media house under the proprietorship of Bishop Cyrus Tayebwa.

An insider told this publication that some of the On Air journalists are paid Shs4,000 (app. $1) per 3-4hrs show. The source says that some of the employees have surrendered their families due to salary defaults.

Crane Radio Ishaka Firing Journalists For Demanding Salaries

This comes barely after two months when other journalists at 87.6 Crane Radio – Entuuha in Ishaka, Bushenyi and Rubirizi FM in Rubirizi district reported intimidations by their employers after they demanded their salary arrears.

In January, Parrots Media investigative team published an undercover report of over four journalists who had been either fired or taken immediate resignation at Crane Radio after they received job-sacking threats from the station manager, Adellah Orishaba. This publication has learned that Orishaba previously got fired from the station together with the station’s Accountant officer.

Further reports allege that many journalists in southwestern Uganda majorly at Glory FM – Mbarara, Hunter FM – Bushenyi, WEBS FM (Endigyito) – Mbarara, Radio Ankole, Radio Messiah, Kaaro FM – Ntungamo, Kanungu FM – Kanungu, Peak FM, Hope FM – Kabale and Rukiga FM among others are crying foul over underpayments and accumulating salary arrears.
