Police in Mbarara last night spent sleepless nights playing ‘seek and hide’ games as they attempted to calm down violent students at Nyamitanga Technical Institute in Nyamitanga division, Mbarara city.
It is alleged that the unruly students were protesting against the arrest of their four colleagues who were recently arrested from school premises over bullying of the new students.
Gilvazio Bafaaki, the institute principal says that his office has been receiving complaints about bullying of the freshers (1st year students) by their counterparts in the second year.
“We have had reports of over 200 male students in the second year teasing and bullying new students, we managed to arrest four and several other arrests were made in last night’s protest,” Bafaaki confirmed
He alleges that students in the second year have been demanding for money and food from the freshers.
The arrested suspects are according to the principal being detained at CPS Mbarara and different other detention centres.
