Makerere University’s next Guild President Robert Maseruka has won with a smaller margin of victory in Friday’s election than any of his predecessors, suggesting he might have to work hard to heal students fraternity that is deeply divided and lagging in opinion polls.

After a bitter contest, Maseruka a third year student of Bachelors of Journalism and Communication ganred 2,558 votes from the total votes cast in the scientific polling exercise compared to 2531votes for his rival, Hillary Oremo Odwee, coursemate, a margin that although comfortable was not as overwhelming as some polls suggested.

According to the results announced by Levi Tshilumba, the chairperson of the 89th guild electoral commission, the margin was the narrowest victory of the past at least three guild elections at the Ivory Tower.

Sabiiti Akankunda (BCOE) became third after he ganred 2334 votes, Baraka Nkoyooyo 841 votes, Evans Murungi got 189 votes, Emmanuel Wanyama obtained 180votes and Andrew Lubinga Ssemakula got 186. Mark Ssebunya and Julius Birigwa came in the last positions after they clinched 53 and 11 votes, respectively.

The college last produced a guild president over five years ago.

Maseruka has been serving as the male GRC school of languages, literature and communication at Makerere and was endorsed as National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate after the EC disqualified their candidate Margret Nattabi and another.
