The police have provided an update on the recent marine accident on Lake Victoria. According to the report, 34 people were onboard the boat when it capsized on August 2nd at 5am. So far, twenty (20) fatalities have been confirmed, while nine (9) individuals have been rescued.
The boat was reportedly transporting a cargo of charcoal, fresh foods, and silver fish, among other goods. Investigators believe that the accident was caused by overloading and bad weather conditions.
The police have mobilized rescue efforts, including teams from the Police Marines, UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit, and local community members on the waters who are trying to locate the missing persons. The authorities have urged members of the public who travel on waters to always wear life jackets and not to overload their vessels.
“We are doing everything possible to locate the missing persons and provide assistance where needed. We extend our sympathies to the families of those who have lost their loved ones,” says SSP Onyango Patrick, PRO Kampala Metropolitan.
