Last week on Sunday, a graphic poster of Darmi Guyo Chari, an Ethiopian national and student of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at KIU western campus broke the internet alleging that the student had been kidnapped from her hostel in Ishaka by a one Jackson Toto Obindi driving in a vehicle registration number UAV 861D.

The victim’s family, students fraternity have been extremely nervous from the day of these reports.

In what seems to be a twist of events, the said victim, Darmi Guyo Chari has recorded a video (with unspecified date) dismissing reports that she was kidnapped stating that she is instead married.

According to the video, the student who is also a member of the Nakivaale refugee settlement in Isingiro district is heard comforting his family that she is happily married refuting allegations of her kidnapping.

She further discloses that the alleged kidnapper, Jackson Toto Obindi, a resident of Arua City is her long time boyfriend known to her family and had been rejected by the family to marry their daughter.

Guyo Chari also says that despite her new marriage, she will continue with her studies assuring her family that her husband Jackson is willing to take on responsibilities and ensure that she completes her course.

The student however, decried insecurities to Jackson’s family and friends by police and asked the president of Uganda, HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Uganda (Nakivaale refugee camp) to intervene and provide her marital family security.

Cases of human trafficking such as kidnaps are on rise in Uganda and in many cases, the victims are taken advantage of by their kidnappers to call their families either demanding for a ransom or falsely comforting them and in the end their lives are inflicted on. It’s however, not clear whether the student recorded the said video with a sound mind or she was influenced by the lover.

By press time, police had not issued any statement regarding the kidnapping reports and the video recording.
