The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced that 69- seater buses will start using a section of River Katonga bridge on the Kampala-Masaka highway that was under reconstruction.
Allen Kagina, UNRA Executive Director the clearance follow a recent inspection on the bridge carried out on September 1, which indicated deflections well within the allowable limits under 30-tonnes.
Katonga river was closed down for heavy trucks in May this year after section of the river subsided. It’s later opened for use to pedestrians, bicyclists, boda bodas, commuter taxis, small car. Heavy tricks such as buses, trailers have been using the Ssembabule – Gomba road.
Kagina did not state the exact date when heavy traffic will resume at the bridge. However, she insists on controlling traffic on the road.
“Consequently, the existing bridge should be opened for all buses under precautionary measures such as continuous monitoring of the road to ensure its structurally safe, constant control of traffic measures including installation of signages at strategic locations on the Masaka and Kampala sides,” said ED Kagina
“The sign posts should clearly displaying which type of vehicle that can use the bridge and the capable load limits and to employ the flagmen to control traffic across the bridge.”
