LEM Mindfulness, a mental health services provider, has extended its services to schools in a bid to tackle the alarming mental health cases in Uganda.

Martin Bakundana, (PhD), the team leader at LEM Mindfulness disclosed that after a media report showcased a high number of mental health cases in the country, they decided to partner with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to take on this burden.

During a mental health lecture held at the Mbarara Institute for Social Development (MSID), Akurut Agnes Okurut, a staff member of LEM Mindfulness, advised students on how to overcome mental health challenges, especially stress. She addressed the adverse effects of stress on the skin, such as pimples, and advised the students to explore healthy means to relieve stress, such as finding activities that bring joy.

Akurut discouraged the use of drugs and alcohol as short-term solutions because they lead to drug abuse and addiction over time. She added that sleep is essential for repairing the body systems, drinking enough water can reduce stress, and regular exercise and healthy eating habits are necessary for maintaining proper mental health.

Students at Mbarara Institute for social development (MISD) attentively attending the LEM mindfulness mental health lecture.

In addition to spreading awareness about the importance of mental health, LEM Mindfulness also helped create a mental health club at the MSID. The organization pledged to support the club and selected a committee of 14 members and two patrons.

LEM Mindfulness taking its services to schools is a step towards winning the mental health battle in Uganda. There is a need for more organizations like LEM Mindfulness to work towards creating a society where mental health is prioritized, and individuals can access the appropriate services for their mental well-being.

LEM-Mindfulness is a registered non-profit organization working to transform individuals and communities living and facing challenges of mental health. Tomorrow September 28, the team will be at Nyakishojwa SSS, Rurehe subcounty, Ruhinda South in Mitooma district.
