A horrifying incident of arson and assault has left the residents of Ntarama and Rusenyi villages in Soko parish, Muramba sub-county, Kisoro district in shock. The incident, which occurred on 1st November 2023 at around 13:00 pm has resulted in the destruction of several homes and severe injuries to one individual.
According to Sebaramba George, a 49-year-old businessman and resident of Kabaya village in Gitendere parish, Nyarusiza sub-county, the community members launched an attack on the homes of Nyiransenga, Mukanoheri Christine, and Regina. The assailants allegedly set their houses ablaze, reducing them to ashes along with all their belongings. The motive behind the attack is believed to be an accusation of witchcraft against the victims.
During the incident, Mukanoheri Christine, a 38-year-old peasant and resident of Ntarama village, Soko parish, Muramba sub-county, was brutally assaulted. Fortunately, she was rescued by police officers from Kisoro police station, who arrived at the scene in time. Christine was immediately rushed to the Torch to Heart Medical Centre, where she is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries.
In response to the incident, a team of police officers led by IP Rwamahe, along with SOCO detectives and uniformed personnel, visited the scene. They meticulously processed and documented the area, collecting evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigation. As a result of their efforts, twenty suspects have been apprehended and are currently in police custody to assist with the investigation.
ASP Maate Elly, the Public Relations Officer for the Kigezi region, confirmed that inquiries into the incident are currently underway. The police are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety and security of the affected community members.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the region, highlighting the need for increased efforts to address issues related to witchcraft accusations and mob justice. Local authorities and community leaders are urged to work together to promote tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among residents.
The Kisoro district police have assured the public that they will spare no effort in ensuring the safety and security of all residents. They have also urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
