Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, the State Minister of Energy and Mineral Development in charge of Minerals, narrowly escaped being shot today at an illegal mining site in Kisoro District. The incident occurred while she was conducting a routine check on allegedly illegal mining activities in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, private security guards from National Cement Company, a subsidiary of the Devki Group, attempted to block the minister’s access and cocked their guns, threatening to shoot. Fortunately, the police and other security agencies responded promptly, disarming the guards and arresting them for further questioning.
The guards, identified as Deus Kiiza, Robert Okurboth, Anthony Niwagaba, Mathias Kajugo, and Robert Mucunguzi, are currently detained at Rubanda CPS. The minister has called for the directors of the company to be held accountable and for increased security measures in the area.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by government officials as they work to combat illegal mining activities in the country. The minister’s team was in Kisoro as part of a nationwide tour to promote sustainable and legal mining practices.
Minister Nyamutoro expressed her shock and outrage at the incident, calling for those responsible to be held accountable. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for increased security measures to protect government officials and citizens.
The police in Kabale District have launched an investigation into the incident, and the minister has assured the public that she will continue to work tirelessly to promote legal and sustainable mining practices in the country.
