Mbarara, Uganda – A suspected arson attack occurred at Shuhada Islamic Secondary School in Nyamitanga cell, Mbarara City South Division, in the early hours of June 21, 2024. The fire destroyed a boys’ dormitory housing 202 students of S.2 and S.3.
Police and fire rescue services responded promptly, putting out the fire with assistance from the Nyamitanga Diocese Humanitarian Help for Uganda Fire Brigade and Holy innocents children’s Hospital Emergency Response team. While all students escaped without major injuries, one student, Baingana Sulaiman, 17, sustained injuries on his back and arms.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. The police have launched an inquiry into the incident, collecting evidence and statements from witnesses.
The school’s property suffered significant damage, but the fire department’s swift response prevented the fire from spreading to other structures.
The incident has raised concerns about student safety and the potential for intentional acts of vandalism in schools. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to aid in the investigation.
The school and local community are shaken by the incident, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the students.
