KAMPALA

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning against a planned protest march to parliament on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, citing lack of transparency and potential for disorder. The police spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke said they are aware of mobilization efforts on social media, with unidentified organizers circulating placards calling for people to gather on all Kampala streets, but the timing and organizational details remain unclear.

According to ACP Kituuma Rusoke, Police Public Relations Officer, the police will not tolerate attempts to incite public disorder or violence through uncontrolled demonstrations. He warned the public against joining the  March noting that it is unapproved and lacks police clearance.

While the right to peaceful protest will be respected, the police urge individuals who wish to exercise their rights to assembly and demonstration to work collaboratively with them to ensure that their expressions are not hijacked by individuals with ulterior motives.

Rusoke emphasized that the police will take all necessary measures to maintain law and order and prevent any criminal activities.

He added that the planned protest march is shrouded in uncertainty, with no clear leadership or organizational structure evident. The police are urging the public to exercise caution and avoid participating in any unauthorized gatherings that may lead to public disorder.

“We urge the public to be aware of their rights and responsibilities. While we respect the right to peaceful protest, we will not tolerate any attempts to incite violence or breach public order. We call upon individuals who wish to exercise their rights to work with us to ensure that their expressions are peaceful and lawful”, said Rusoke.
