Rotary Club Launches Renovation of Ishekye Unit for the Handicapped School in Sheema

The Rotary Club of Akright Kampala has had launched the project for renovation of Ishekye Unit for the Handicapped Primary School in Kabwohe division, Sheema Municipality. The project, valued at shillings 240 million, aims to revamp the school’s deteriorating infrastructure, including two classroom blocks, two student dormitories, walkways, and staff quarters.

The initiative comes after the school management committee appealed for support from the well-wishers address the school’s challenges of dilapidated infrastructure.

Founded in 1989 by the community, Ishekye Unit for the Handicapped is one of the few schools in Sheema district catering to children living with disabilities. The school has an overall enrollment of 200 pupils from Kabwohe and other neighbouring communities. Of this number, 189 are handicapped learners.

Despite its vital role, Ishekye school has struggled with numerous challenges, including inadequate classrooms, teacher accommodation, and access to safe and clean water.

Pearl Kahindi Habwomugisha, President of the Rotary Club of Akright Kampala, emphasized the club’s commitment to supporting the school as part of their social corporate responsibility. He urged parents not to deny children with disabilities their rights to access education noting that they are also important people in society who should enjoy equal rights.

Speaking at the launch of the project, Joy Kabatooro, the school’s headteacher commended Rotary Club of Akright Kampala for their donation which she said will address the challenges of lack of classrooms, inadequate teacher accommodation, and limited access to safe water among others.

On the other hand, Seith Bishanga, the school’s management committee chairperson, expressed gratitude to the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) for their support in capacity-building workshops at the school. Bishanga said the support has enabled them to run school activities smoothly.

The mayor of Sheema municipality, Abel Kahara pledged his support for inclusive education among children with disabilities in Sheema municipality.
