City Hall Magistrates court in Kampala has acquitted political activist Mr. Habib Buwembo of all charges leveled on him for insulting and threatening the person of the speaker of Parliament of Uganda Rt. Hon. Anita Among over calling her a thief in the controversial Karamoja Iron sheets scandal. Buwembo who has been in custody for a total of 157 days says he is now suing Speaker Among for damages on his personality amounting to UGX 10 Billion shillings.

“Iam going to sue fresh charges on Ms. Anita Among for subjecting me to malicious arrest, prosecution, defamation and loss or damages which are amounting to UGX 10 Bn shillings”, he told reporters moments after the Court acquitted him.

Mr. Buwembo said the genesis of his troubles began on 22nd September, 2023, when he was arrested for calling the Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among “Karamoja Iron Sheets thief”. He said he has enough evidence implicating Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among in the theft of the said Karamoja Iron sheets.

According to particulars of the offence filed by police against Mr. Buwembo, he committed the crime of Malicious Information, contrary to the Computer Misuse (Amended) Act, Article 26 (1) and (2).

“Habib Buwembo on 21st September 2023 at an unknown place in Kampala city using computer to wit mobile phone No. 0702819994, without any legitimate purpose of communication transmitted through his Facebook Account (Buwembo Habib) and various Whatsapp forum………malicious information addressing Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among as Karamoja Iron Sheets thief, well knowing that this was unlawful and ridiculing the name of Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among”, reads particulars of the offence dated 25th September 2023.

Kampala City Hall presiding Judge, Rehma Nasozi, acquitted Mr. Buwembo of all charges due to the non-appearance of Rt. Hon Anita Among or her legal representative during the hearing of the case on Tuesday.
