Two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a speeding police vehicle veered off the road and overturned on the Katosi-Nyenga road in Buwooya village, BUIKWE district.
It is alleged that the accident occurred when the driver of a police vehicle, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number UP 7503, that was enroute from Nyenga to Mukono, lost control and veered off the road overturning multiple times leading to loss of lives on Thursday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Sam Emusugutu, driver, and Faustino Ejaapu, a cousin to AIP Esther Amasikido. They were pronounced dead on arrival to hospital.
Among those injured are AIP Esther Amasikido, her maid Mary Achieng (28), her sons Ethorn Mwidu (6) and Elian Mwidu (2), and a juvenile cousin, Okello.
Casualities were immediately rushed to St. Charles Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe District.
“The bodies of the deceased were later transferred to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations,” police said.
SP Hellen Butoto, the Police spokesperson for the Ssezibwa Region, confirmed the accident, adding that the vehicle involved had been towed to Ngogwe Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. Butoto urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during the holiday season, to prevent such incidents.
