The Ministry of Gender is requesting an additional Shs12.24 billion to sustain the salaries of 17 gazetted traditional and cultural leaders. The proposal ensures each leader continues to receive a monthly salary of Shs60 million.

The ministry’s appeal follows concerns over a drastic salary reduction to Shs5 million per month under the proposed Shs1.02 billion allocation in the 2025/26 budget. Workers MP Agnes Kunihira presented the case to the Budget Committee, emphasizing that reducing the leaders’ pay could strain relationships between the government and cultural institutions.

His Royal Highness Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II receives warm welcome at Entebbe Airport from his recuperation palace in Namibia by the Buganda Kingdom Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and other Kingdom Officials on Sunday night.

Members of Parliament echoed Kunihira’s concerns, warning that the cuts could lead to dissatisfaction among cultural leaders and their kingdoms. In April 2024, Parliament approved Shs31.33 billion for salaries and Shs17.2 billion for constructing palaces for the Iteso, Tieng Adhola, Buruli, and Rwenzururu kingdoms.

The Ministry of Gender argues that maintaining the current salaries is vital to preserving cultural heritage and fostering community development. Earlier this year, the Traditional Leaders Forum called on the government to honor its commitments. Kwar Adhola, the Tororo cultural leader, highlighted the promise of Shs60 million for kingdoms and Shs15 million for personal assistants.

The Budget Committee is now deliberating the ministry’s request as the government balances priorities in the 2025/26 financial plan.
