The Uganda AIDS Commission has assured the public of the continuity of HIV prevention and treatment services following a recent executive order by the President of the United States, Donald Trump which mandates a 90-day freeze on the implementation of almost all U.S. foreign aid, effective January 24, 2025.
In a press statement, the Commission highlighted that all HIV implementing partners in Uganda supported by the U.S. Government have been instructed to begin implementing the executive order. Recognizing the risks of overdependence on donor funding, the Uganda AIDS Commission has been coordinating with HIV stakeholders to develop a national sustainability framework for Uganda’s HIV response. These discussions will be expedited to guide the Government in making strategic decisions related to the executive order.
The Uganda AIDS Commission is working closely with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, including people living with HIV, to ensure that HIV prevention and treatment services continue without any disruptions.
The public is advised to continue visiting both government and non-government health facilities to access HIV services. Health workers are ready to serve patients according to their scheduled appointments.
The Commission remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted HIV services and is taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the foreign aid freeze on Uganda’s HIV response.
