The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Commission (EC) has assured party members of a transparent selection process for the Kawempe North by-election flag bearer.
Parliament recently declared the Kawempe North parliamentary seat vacant, and the National Electoral Commission has scheduled a by-election for March 13, 2025, to fill the position left by the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.
NUP has begun receiving applications from interested candidates, and as of now, two aspirants—Umar Magala and Fredrick Kakyika—have picked nomination forms. Additionally, Yiga Musa has collected forms to contest for the Kazo Angola Councillor seat, although only one candidate has so far been fully accredited.
Speaking to the media at the NUP headquarters in Kavule, Bwaise, after the first day of nominations, Mercy Walukamba, the NUP EC chairperson, emphasized the party’s commitment to a fair and transparent selection process. She stated that a debate will be organized for all nominated candidates to allow party members to assess their capabilities before a final decision is made.
Walukamba also dismissed concerns about favoritism in the process, assuring party members that the selection will be free, fair, and transparent to counter negative perceptions about the party’s internal democracy.
Walukamba encouraged interested candidates to submit their applications within the set deadlines.
