Without giving a genuine explanation, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the postponement of the National Voters’ Register and the register for Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
Initially, the exercise to display the national voters’ register was set to begin this week on Wednesday 17th April, 2025, and end on 8th May, 2025, however, it has been rescheduled to commence on 25th April,2025 and will conclude on May 15.
In a statement issued by the commission chairperson, Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, display of register for SIGs has been postponed to 25th April, 2025 to May 8, from April 17, where it was originally scheduled to begin.
“Further display period for the recommendations on inclusions and deletions, if any, from the respective parish tribunals in line with Section 26(20 of the Electoral Commission Act will now run from Friday 16th May,2025 to Monday 26th May, 2025, at the respective parishes countrywide,” said Byabakama.
The announcement was met with mixed reactions. While some stakeholders welcomed the move as a sign of due diligence, others expressed concern over the repeated delays and their potential impact on voter turnout and confidence.
However, the EC has urged stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with the Commission during the transition.
