The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has cautioned the public against violent attacks on their officers during security operations.
The stern warning was issued by the police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, during a joint security press conference at police headquarters Naguru, Kampala on Monday.
Pointing out two separate incidents in Mayuge and Bukwo districts, respectively, where police officers were violently attacked and injured by suspects, suspect’s relatives and a local leader, Rusoke raised concerns over rising lawlessness, particularly targeting officers during arrests.
“In Mayuge, the suspect together with his brother attacked a police officer who was attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect on June 20. Both the officer and the suspect obtained injuries,” Kituuma recalled.
In another incident in Bukwo, he added, “… a police officer accidentally shot in the ankle and the suspect was shot in the leg.” “The confrontation was initiated by the LC Chairperson.”
Kituuma who emphasized the role of police in ensuring law and order said the institution will not sit and watch criminals interfering with officers who are lawfully executing their duties. He warned that the actions undermine public order and would be dealt with accordingly.
“These acts of defiance are not only dangerous but also criminal. Police is mandated to protect all citizens, including suspects, and must be allowed to do its work without interferences,” he explained.
