NTUNGAMO

Over 100 individuals graduated in hairdressing under the Emyooga initiative at a colorful ceremony held by Muganda Abesigamukama Beauty Salon in Itojo Sub-county, Ntungamo District. The event was officiated by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Jimmy Tashobya Omugogozi, who used the occasion to urge residents to uphold peace and unity as the country approaches election season.

Tashobya praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership in promoting community-centered programs such as Emyooga, the Parish Development Model, and other employment creation strategies. He emphasized that such initiatives empower youth, women, and men by equipping them with practical, income-generating skills.

Addressing the graduates, Tashobya encouraged them to use their newly acquired skills to build sustainable livelihoods, uphold good morals, and actively contribute to the socio-economic development of their communities. He also pledged to advocate for increased government support to bolster the performance and sustainability of Emyooga groups in the district.

The salon’s director and lead trainer, Hellen Nakabila Muganda, credited the Emyooga program for the growth of her business since 2021. She highlighted how it enabled her to offer professional vocational training to a growing number of learners. Muganda appealed to the government for assistance in expanding the training facility, including additional space and equipment to accommodate the rising demand.

Muganda further called on both the government and the public to place equal value on vocational training and traditional academics, noting the vital role hands-on skills play in transforming communities.

Representing the Microfinance Support Centre, Grace Atwiine commended the group’s consistency and commitment over the years. She announced an additional UGX 20 million loan under the Emyooga program to help support their continued growth and emphasized the importance of accountability and proper fund management.

Local leaders in attendance applauded the salon’s impact on young girls, equipping them with practical skills that help secure employment and keep them focused on productive life paths.

LC5 Councilor for Itojo Sub-county, Denis Muhumuza Savimbi, criticized what he described as the government’s bias toward elite beneficiaries, especially Members of Parliament. “It’s unfortunate to see government giving UGX 100 million to parliamentarians while leaving out such struggling groups,” he said, calling for more grassroots investment.

LC3 Chairperson Peace Tukahirwa echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the positive moral and economic influence the salon training center has had on the local community.
