The Local Organising Committee (LoC) of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has threatened legal actions against undisciplined football fans during CHAN 2024 tournament matches at Namboole.

Dr. Dennis Mugimba, the LoC chairperson of the communication and signage CHAN/AFCON, said on Tuesday August 26 that offenders will face tough penalties under the National Sports Act after prosecutions.

“We are going to be very strict with enforcing discipline. Once police apprehends culprits and due process of the law is followed, those convicted will be made known to the public,” Mugimba said.

The warnings come after two incidents during the Uganda Vs Senegal and Uganda Vs South Africa matches. In the first, a Ugandan fan stormed the pitch as Uganda attempted to score, while in the second, some supporters hurled empty plastic containers at South African players celebrating their goal.

However, Mugimba warned that LOC will not give a cold shoulder to any forms of indiscipline in Ugandan football. He added that the warning applies not only to CHAN 2024 fixtures but also to domestic matches organised by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

“The law provides for a fine of up to sh9.6m, a jail term of 10 years, or both for anyone found guilty of disrupting matches or interfering with players, referees, stewards, or organisers,” he added.

Additionally, Mugimba disclosed that LoC has partnered with police to ensure security at stadiums and to curb hooliganism. “Fans must understand that football is about enjoyment and fair play. Anyone who threatens the safety of others or interferes with the game will be dealt with according to the law,” Mugimba cautioned.

Authorities say maintaining discipline will be critical to the successful organisation of the continental tournaments.
