Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party on Friday submitted to the electoral commission (EC) over 2 million signatures, far exceeding the required 100 signatures from two thirds of all districts across Uganda, to back Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi James’ presidential bid in the 2026 polls.
The party officials were led by their Chief Electoral Commissioner, Hon. Toterebuka Bamwenda Boniface and the vice chairperson for Western region, Hon. Robert Centenary. The submitted files now await verification by the Electoral Commission which started early this week.
Speaking to journalists shortly after submitting the files, Centenary expressed pride in collecting signatures from all districts, saying that it’s a testament that the FDC candidate is strong, and added that the two millions signatures is a confirmation of future votes already banked in the FDC ballot box.
Pointing out the ongoing exercise of local council nominations, where some nominees are being rejected despite having government-issued National Identification Numbers (NINs).
Centenary, raised concerns about the Electoral Commission’s system, which he says has issues which should be addressed urgently.
The FDC tasked the EC to check its system with other government agencies to prevent fraud during the voting process.
Upon, verification of the signatures, the FDC candidate – Nandala Mafabi will be presented for nomination on September 23rd, at new EC offices in Lweza, Kajjansi, Wakiso district. The party has invited all members and well-wishing Ugandans to join in the nomination as well as mobilizing support for their candidates.
