LIRA

Security authorities in the North Kyoga region have issued a stern warning against what they described as a planned illegal riot by supporters of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) party, scheduled for September 29, 2025.

According to police, the unrest is planned to begin in Lira City before spreading to other districts within the region. The supporters are allegedly demonstrating against omission of their party president, Jimmy Michael James Akena, from the presidential race.

The North Kyoga Region police spokesperson SP PJ Okema, says home Akena’s home in Lira City is being used to coordinate the planned demonstration.

Okema says the protest is illegality, noting that police has not received any formal notification for such an assembly, a legal requirement.

“We have not got any formal notifications to the office of the Inspector General of Police nor a reply to that effect; it’s therefore a very illegal intention,” the statement read.

Authorities have assured the public that the region remains peaceful and vowed to deal decisively with anyone attempting to disrupt the peace in the area.

“Anyone who wishes to disrupt the peace will be dealt with as the law may require,” SP Okema warned.

The police have called on the public to remain law-abiding and to report any individuals involved in planning or inciting the riot. Parrots Media has learned that all territorial police commands in the North Kyoga region have been instructed to act accordingly to prevent any breach of peace.
