Police in Kampala Metropolitan have launched a manhunt for armed suspects who shot dead the Officer in Charge of Ntawo Police Station, ASP Emma Bagenda, during a late-night operation in Mukono District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala, the incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, when Bagenda and his team attempted to intercept a motorcycle carrying suspected criminals along a road in Ntawo.
“ASP Bagenda was shot dead while trying to stop the suspects. One of his team members, a police constable, sustained injuries but survived and was rushed to hospital,” Kawala confirmed.
Police reports indicate that the officers were responding to a tip-off about an armed robbery in Kiwala village. When they flagged down the motorcycle, the occupants opened fire without warning, fatally wounding Bagenda and injuring his colleague. The assailants also made off with an AK-47 rifle belonging to the police.
Addressing a joint security press briefing on Monday, Uganda Police Force spokesperson ACP Micheal Kituuma Rusoke described the incident as a targeted attack by suspected armed robbers.
“When they attempted to stop a suspicious motorcycle, the occupants opened fire, fatally wounding ASP Bagenda Emmanuel. The police constable was also injured but survived and was transferred to the hospital,” Rusoke said.
“We are pursuing the assailants, who will be brought to justice once apprehended.”
The killing of ASP Bagenda sent shockwaves through Mukono District, where residents have expressed concern over rising cases of violent crime. Security agencies have assured the public that intensified operations are underway to track down the perpetrators.
