Outgoing Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has formally accepted the results of the 2026 Lord Mayoral election, issuing a strongly worded statement reflecting on his tenure, the electoral process, and his future political direction.
In his message dated 24 January 2026, Lukwago acknowledged what he described as flaws in the broader 2026 General Elections but affirmed that he would respect the final outcome of the mayoral race. He expressed deep gratitude to the residents of Kampala for entrusting him with what he called a “golden opportunity” to lead the city through a period of significant transformation.
Lukwago, who has served multiple terms at City Hall, said he leaves office “with a great sense of pride and elation,” citing what he views as a record of integrity, resilience, and principled leadership. He highlighted his commitment to the urban poor, his stance against corruption, and his efforts to champion equitable development across the capital.
Throughout the statement, he emphasized that he had remained faithful to the mandate given to him by the electorate, noting that he exits the Lord Mayor’s Parlour “with a clean sheet.” He framed his tenure as one marked by steadfast advocacy for accountability, protection of public assets, and resistance to what he described as “nefarious interests” and “marauding cartels.”
Lukwago also reflected on key moments of his leadership, asserting that he consistently rose to the occasion when Kampala required firm guidance, social justice interventions, or defense of its heritage. He credited his achievements to divine guidance and the unwavering support of city residents.
As he prepares to leave office, Lukwago extended well‑wishes to the incoming city leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to broader national causes. He stated that his future efforts will be directed toward advancing social justice, strengthening the rule of law, and advocating for what he described as a peaceful transition to a constitutional political order.
