Nsangi Police Division has arrested 32 suspects during a night operation targeting youths allegedly involved in smoking suspected narcotic drugs and stealing phones and handbags in parts of Wakiso District.
The disruptive operation was conducted between 10:30pm and 3:30am in the areas of Kyengera Central, Nabaziza, Masanda and Kinawa following complaints from residents about rising cases of theft during rush hours.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation was prompted by intelligence reports linking some youths to criminal activities, including snatching of phones and bags from unsuspecting pedestrians and commuters.
“All the 32 suspects are currently detained at Kyengera Police Station pending screening and further investigations,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police said the suspects will be profiled and those found culpable will be charged accordingly, while those cleared will be released.
Residents have recently expressed concern over increased cases of theft, particularly in the evening hours when many people are returning from work.
Owoyesigyire reiterated the Police’s commitment to maintaining law and order and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing information that can aid in crime prevention.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents in these areas,” he said. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
