KAMPALA
The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court has sentenced former State Minister for Karamoja Affairs and Speaker of the People’s Parliament, Agnes Nandutu, to four years in prison.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice Jane Akuo Kajuga handed down the sentence following Nandutu’s recent conviction in the iron sheets scandal. In addition to the custodial sentence, Nandutu has been barred from holding any public office for a period of ten years.
Justice Kajuga further ordered that the iron sheets recovered during investigations be returned to the Office of the Prime Minister and redistributed to the intended beneficiaries in Karamoja.
During mitigation, Nandutu pleaded for leniency, citing poor health, her responsibility as a single mother of nine school-going children, and the care of her elderly mother. However, her appeal was rejected by the court.
