The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially kicked off its internal search for a candidate to contest the Kikuube District LC5 chairperson seat, following the death of the incumbent, Peter Banura.
Addressing the party’s weekly press briefing at their headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Monday, FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat confirmed that the party is moving swiftly to meet the deadlines set by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The Kikuube district seat fell vacant following a fatal road crash on April 4, which claimed the life of Banura shortly after he had secured re-election in the general elections.
According to the roadmap released by the EC, nominations for the by-election are scheduled for May 25 and 26, while the final polling day has been set for June 10.
Amuriat urged party members within the Bunyoro sub-region to take the vacancy seriously.
”We have called upon all interested FDC members and supporters within Chikuhuwe District to formally express their interest. This is in keeping with our internal procedures. It is from among those who come forward that the party shall identify and present a flag bearer,” Amuriat stated.
In addition, the FDC president took a swipe at the government for what he termed as “dilly-dallying” regarding the conduct of Local Council I (LC1) elections.
Amuriat revealed that the party has already begun identifying village representatives to contest for LC1 and 2 chairperson and women council positions across the country.
”Where we are not able to identify a new candidate, we are going to prompt our existing chairpersons in the village to run. We are not short of them,” he added.
