SOROTI:
The High Court in Soroti has on Tuesday August 31, nullified the election of Moses Okia Attan as Soroti city East Member of Parliament and ordered the electoral commission to conduct fresh elections.
The petition challenging Okia’s election (FDC) was filled by Herbert Edmund Ariko (independent).
Court presided over justice Anne Mugenyi, ruled that there was noncompliance with the electoral laws after Opiyai and Aloet were taken away from Soroti city East.
Court further said there was voter disenfranchisement after they were wrongly removed from their constituency to vote in another constituency.
The petitioner argued that court agreed that the removal of Aloet and Opiyai wards from Soroti city East affected him because that was his stronghold.
“I was defeated with 439 votes. Court has agreed that over 5,000 voters who were disenfranchised from Opiyai and Aloet affected my victory because,”
Court noted that if there were no defranchising of voters, Ariko could have obtained more than 439 votes, thus ordering for fresh elections.
