Uganda’s inflation increases to 2.2%

Uganda’s inflation rate for the last 12 months to September 2021 has increased to 2.2% up from 1.9% in August 2021.

This was mainly driven by the rise in the commodity prices of ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, furnishings, household equipment and routine household, personal care, and social protection.

This was according to the Director Macroeconomic Statistics, Aliziki Khauda Lubega, while releasing the consumer Price Index (CPI) report, at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

Excerpt from the CPI report

Among the items that saw increments were; utilities, communication and in food there was Matooke water melon, sorghum grain, beans, onions and mangoes increased.

On the other hand, there were some decreases in the prices of the commodities under; Transport Clothing and Footwear, Recreation, Sport and Culture between September 2020 and September 2021.

Regionally, with inflation by income groups and geographical areas Kampala High Income recorded the highest inflation at 3.1 % for the 12 months to September 2021 up from 2.8% in August 2021 2021. Due to Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ Inflation that increased to 2.5 percent in September 2021 up from 0.5 percent registered in August 2021.

This was followed by Fort Portal at 2.6 % up from 1.4 % in August 2021 due to increases in the Annual Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ Inflation that increased to 5.7 percent in September 2021, up from 3.9 percent in August 2021.This was due to increases in the annual Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ Inflation that increased to 5.7 percent in September 2021, up from 3.9 percent in August 2021.

Lastly Kampala Low Income had the lowest inflation being recorded at 0.2 % for the 12 down from 0.3% in August 2021 which was mainly due to Transport Inflation that declined to minus 8.1 Percent for the 12 months to September 2021 down from minus 3.3 percent in August 2021.

Looking at noncore inflation, the Uganda Bureau of statistics noted that annual Energy Fuel and Utilities Inflation (EFU) increased to 0.2 percent, up from minus 0.5 percent in August due to Annual Liquid Energy Fuels Inflation that increased to 4.8 percent in September Specifically, Annual Petrol Inflation increased to 9.6 percent in September up from 7.4 percent in August
