Agriculture is core to every Nation’s development most especially in this 21st century. In Uganda, agriculture sector plays a big role in employing many youths. But why is it that the youth engagement in agriculture is declining?.
This is because of the negative prespections youths have towards Agriculture. Many Ugandan youth attribute the word “Farming ” to being poor, backward, dirty and conservativenes therefore relating thier failure to lack of start up capital, competitive market for agricultural products, inadquate labour technologies for ease of operations among others.
As a result they are faced with economic challenges which result in undue poverty and vulnerability.
It has also led youths to seek employment in other sectors of economy inorder to empower themselves economically.
Zubair Ainebyoona, a Ugandan student in ISreal is one of the youths harvesting big from farming.
At 28-years, Zubairi invests in agriculture mostly in growing grapes and peaches.
While Speaking to Parrots UG an online News publication in Uganda, Zubairi stressed that it doesn’t require a lot for someone to start farming but rather putting the idea into practice.
“There’s never enough capital to start up any project. Its always good however to start small and grow big,” Zubairi elucidated.
He urges the youths especially graduates to stop underlooking agro-jobs imploring them to leave urban comforts but instead go to utilise their ancestral lands.
“The youth out there, should embrace agriculture and stop looking at it as a last resort,” he urged.
