Teachers at Logiri Girl’s Secondary School in Logor Sub-County in Arua Vura district are crying foul after a suspected conman defrauded them 35 million shillings in a job promotion fraudulent scheme.
The suspect, Victor Aja Adame, a resident of Garuga, Bukaya village in Katabi Town Council Wakiso district allegedly conned teachers of the said school their money between September 2023 and January 2024 after he promised them job deals at the ministry of education and sports.
The incident was reported to Police by the school head teacher Lilian Apio Tako in January, 2024.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said the suspect impersonated a staff from the office of the Minister for Higher Education Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo.
“He defrauded One million shillings from each of the 35 victims including 31 teacher, three nurses and one Lab technician of Logir Girls SS under the pretext of registering them as government workers,” Enanga said.
After collecting the money, Enanga added, “the suspect’s phone went off which prompted the victims through their head Teacher to report the case and the police swiftly started a manhunt of Adame until they arrested him.”
He added that he was bribing the teachers promising them promotions as head teachers and deputy head teachers.
Police said the suspect also scammed teachers by promising them that their top performing students in senior six will receive government scholarships for university education.
Adame is currently in police custody on charges of impersonation and obtaining money by false pretense.
