The government has released UGX 3.43 billion to pay pensions to 1,269 verified civilian veteran beneficiaries, Minister Alice Kaboyo announced at a press conference at the Media Centre today.
Since the Akasiimo programme began in 2008, a total of 87,269 beneficiaries have been verified and paid in recognition of their contribution to the liberation struggle between 1981 and 1986.
The funds released will benefit veterans in three districts: Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola. Minister Kaboyo emphasized that the scheme aims to support all areas involved in the war that brought the NRM government to power, not just Luweero fighters.
The minister urged beneficiaries to use their pensions wisely for their social and economic development. The verification committee will continue to identify and verify civilian veterans who have not yet been considered, and the allocated funds will be paid to the rightful beneficiaries.
The list of beneficiaries, including their names, National Identification Numbers (NIN), amount received, sub-county, and district, will be displayed on notice boards in the respective beneficiary districts and the Luweero Regional office for easy reference.
