Saadi Gaddafi, the son of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was released from prison after spending years behind bars for multiple crimes he committed during his father’s presidency in Libya.
‘’Saadi Muammar Gaddafi has been freed from prison, in accordance with a court ruling handed down several years ago,’’ the source said
He did not however share details on whether or not Saadi Gaddafi had left the country or not. However, several media reports on Sunday suggested Saadi had already taken a flight out to Turkey.
Amidst all speculation and rumor, a source at the prosecutor’s office in the end confirmed that Saadi had been freed.
‘’The chief prosecutor asked, several months ago for the execution of the decision relating to Saadi Gaddafi as soon as all the required conditions had been satisfied,’’ the source said.
Apparently, Saadi had a choice to either stay or leave the country according to the source.
Many knew the 47-year-old Saadi for his playboy lifestyle during his father’s dictatorship. Following the uprising, Saadi fled the country to Niger before they extradited him back to Libya.
They held the former professional football player in a Tripoli prison, accused of crimes against protesters in 2011. Also, they accused him of the 2005 killing of Libyan football coach Bashir al-Rayani.
However in 208 the court of appeal acquitted him of Rayani’s murder.
