Fire broke out at the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID), Banana factory in Bushenyi district Southwest Uganda last night. The blaze, which started from an unknown source, ravaged the factory’s storage yard, destroying properties worth millions.
According to Nathan Tumwebaze Kayogoza, a 67-year-old eyewitness and Estates Development officer at PIBID, the fire began in the park yard where company materials were stored.
Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, SSP Martial Tumusiime, confirmed that the fire damaged properties worth millions, including irrigation materials, PVC water pipes, plumbing materials, and iron sheets.
PIBID workers attempted to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers and water, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Preliminary police reports suggest that the fire may have been started by an insider, as it was concentrated in one area.
SSP Tumusiime stated that exhibits of burnt properties have been recovered and documented, and will be submitted to the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL) for analysis.
Tumusiime said the police are investigating the matter to apprehend the suspects.
