The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) managing director, Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, has urged Catholics to prioritise household income generation as part of efforts to achieve sustainable development and improve family welfare.
Mugisha, who is also the Head of Laity of the Archdiocese of Mbarara, said Christian development should address both the spiritual and economic needs of families.
He said improving household incomes was essential for enabling families to meet their basic needs while preserving human dignity and supporting spiritual growth.
As part of efforts to improve household incomes and promote economic empowerment among the faithful, Mugisha announced plans to distribute agricultural inputs to Christians in the diocese. According to him, the initiative would target Christians across the Archdiocese, although it may not reach every household.
“We are going to distribute agricultural inputs to the Christians. We may not reach out to everyone, but we shall change the mindset of many people to become economically empowered,” Mugisha said.
Mugisha made the remarks on Thursday, August 6, 2026, during the Marian Carols of the Archdiocese of Mbarara held at Nyamitanga Cathedral Hill in Mbarara City.
He also called on Christians to embrace the synodal approach in the work of the Church, which involves walking, listening and working together as the People of God.
Mugisha said the Church should encourage families to pursue integral household transformation, where economic empowerment goes hand in hand with faith, values and responsible family life.
Additionally, the head of laity also urged Christians to participate in programmes of the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Forum (AMDEF), saying their contributions would help fund development activities in the Archdiocese. He said the funds raised through such programmes would support projects including schools, hospitals and the training and welfare of seminarians.
He also commended Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha for promoting the synodal approach, saying it fosters unity and encourages the clergy and laity to work together in advancing the mission of the Church.
The Marian Carols brought together more than 20 parish choirs from across the Archdiocese in a celebration characterised by prayer, music and fellowship.
Mugisha applauded the participating choirs and urged parishes that did not participate to prepare their choirs for the next edition.
“Choirs help in strengthening our faith. By following what is happening, you get grounded,” he said.
The event, presided over by the Archbishop of Mbarara, the Most Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, also featured cultural performances, including a traditional dance by Christ The King Choir of St John Baptist – Birunduma Catholic Parish from Isingiro.
Presiding over the event, Archbishop Bainomugisha hailed Mugisha for his commitment to the Church and servant leadership, urging the faithful to continue using their talents and abilities to serve God and humanity.
The Archbishop said the event was not only a musical gathering but also an opportunity for evangelisation through prayer, song and fellowship.
The celebration brought together faith, culture and community, highlighting the Church’s role in strengthening families and communities.
